After allegedly misusing police force to protect their personal buses, the Badals are now in the dock for allegedly using the police to crush voices against corruption. <br>Investigations revealed that the Punjab Police implicated a 13-year-old Dalit boy in the Ferozepur Punjab Students Union (PSU) protest as the bus belonged to a powerful Akali Dal politician. <br>The charges were later withdrawn, when the issue snowballed into a major controversy. <br> Independent legislators Balwinder Bains and Simarjit Bains had launched a state-wide protest against illegal sand mining.<br>Another blatant misuse of the police was found in the cases registered against two independent legislators and brothers, Balwinder Bains (54) and Simarjit (43), who had launched a statewide protest against illegal sand mining. <br>The Bains brothers were protesting against the illegal mining at Roop Nagar on May 13 and at a mining site called Chuhadwal near Ludhiana on April 17, when 'illegal mining' charges were slapped on them. <br>The local police went one step ahead and booked the whistleblowers for 'looting'.


The Assistant Police Sub-Inspector, Gurmit Singh, in his statement, had said Simarjit tried to crush him under a 'tractor'. So the police also slapped an attempt to murder charge against him. <br>"Our protests were symbolic and instead of acting against the sand mafias they implicated us in false cases. Illegal sand worth Rs 100 crore is being sold in the state every day. The mafias have political connections who charge outrageous prices for sand. The mining business has been captured by the Badals and Congress leaders," Simarjeet told Mail Today. <br> RELATED ARTICLES Share this article Share However, the investigations revealed that the cop who accused Bains brothers of attempting to kill him was not present at the site. Police records say he was in Meharban police station. <br>Sources said the police also twisted the statement of mining officer Manjit Singh, who had reported illegal mining. <br>The police added spice to his complaint and reported that Bains, along with eight supporters armed with revolvers, attacked the officials while one of them also snatched a purse.<br>Sources said the mining department official informed the deputy commissioner about false allegations which were levelled by the police on his behalf. <br>"We had just complained about illegal mining.There was no looting and snatching incident," Manjit Singh said. <br>However, the police denied the allegations and said that the cases have only been registered on the basis of the complaint received from the Mining Officer. <br>"The cases have been registered on the basis of complaint filed by the mining officer. We have the complaint," investigating officer Rajwant Singh said. <br>Interestingly enough, the police booked the whistleblowers who raised their voices against illicit mining, but do not seem concerned about the illegal mining itself, which goes on unabated at Roop Nagar and Ludhiana.<br>
